Is there any way to realize that you have high blood pressure?
Nearly no symptoms are characteristic of hypertension, so it's most common to come by chance when you come for a checkup. In rare cases, headaches, fatigue, breathlessness, congestion, and numbness in the hands and feet may occur, but if you have symptoms that are self-aware, it is usually likely to be complications caused by high blood pressure. However, even if there is no discomfort or pain, there is a risk of damage to the kidneys and retina, and suddenly angina or stroke occurs and death occurs. That's why high blood pressure is scary.
Is there any way to prevent it?
Since
hypertension is closely related to vascular aging, the risk rate is bound to increase with age. As of 2018, the prevalence rate was 11.7% in their 30s, 20.6% in their 40s, 34.7% in their 50s, 46% in their 60s, and 70.2% in their 70s or older, showing a rapid increase in prevalence as the age increases. However, as high blood pressure can result from wrong lifestyle habits such as salty eating habits and obesity, there is room to delay or prevent high blood pressure depending on your efforts.
I think it's important to have a habit of checking your blood pressure.
Some patients who take the
hypertension medication for the first time may complain that they have a headache and that their blood pressure seems to be out of control. In this case, you can prescribe a more effective drug, but on the other hand, it is most important to check your blood pressure accurately in each situation as your blood pressure drops and headaches appear. A home blood pressure gauge can provide significant help. In addition, when using a home blood pressure meter, it is recommended to urinate within an hour of waking up in the morning, sit down, rest for about 5 minutes, and measure it. It’s the same before you go to sleep at night.
If I’m diagnosed with
hypertension, will I take medicine unconditionally?
Patients with pre-hypertension or early hypertension will be advised to improve their lifestyle first. However, medication may be prescribed when there are special variables such as concerns about complications or circumstances in which you cannot come to the hospital often. Patients with advanced progression, or second-stage hypertension, take the medicine immediately to prevent complications. There are many types of drugs, but blood pressure is controlled by lowering the resistance of peripheral blood vessels, participating in reducing body fluid volume and heart rate control, or suppressing the central sympathetic nervous system. As the mechanism of the drug is different, use it appropriately considering the patient's condition.
