
MS Swaminathan Death: India’s great agricultural scientist MS Swaminathan said goodbye to the world at the age of 98.On Thursday (September 28, 2023), he breathed his last in Chennai, the capital of Tamil Nadu.Born in Thanjavur district of Tamil Nadu on August 7, 1925, Swaminathan was an agricultural scientist.Swaminathan has a big role in becoming self -sufficient in the case of food grains through India’s Green Revolution.The yield of farmers increased due to research by agricultural scientist Swaminathan.The works of Dr. Swaminathan, known as the father of India’s Green Revolution, not only improved the agricultural sector of the country, but also helped India fight with food shortage.Swaminathan not only worked for the good of the farmers, but he prepared a report which is still discussed today.This report is known as Swaminathan report.Let us tell you about this report today.What is Swaminathan report?The UPA government formed a commission in 2004 to find out the status of farmers, named ‘National Commission on Farmers’ (NCF).This commission was chaired by Dr. MS Swaminathan.The NCF submitted five reports in total from 2004 to 2006, which are today known as the Swaminathan Commission report or Swaminathan report.It was told about all the methods through which the condition of farmers could be improved.What were the suggestions given to the government?It was mentioned in the report how the agricultural sector of the country can be improved by increasing productivity and profit.The NCF also gave some suggestions to the government.Let us tell you about the suggestions through which the condition of farmers can improve.A strategy should be made for food and nutrition security in the country.Productivity and stability of agricultural systems should be improved.The farmers should be improved to increase the flow of rural loans.A program of farming for farmers in dry land as well as mountainous and coastal areas should be prepared.Competition in the quality and cost of agricultural goods should be improved.Farmers should be protected from imports when global prices fall.Strengthen local bodies, so that they are able to strengthen the ecosystem for better farming.What was the Swaminathan report on MSP?The Minimum Support Price (MSP) is said to be the value of the production of farmers, which the government decides.In easy language, no one can buy grain under the prices of MSP in the market.Farmers themselves do not do this, because the option of selling the government on the MSP is open.The Swaminathan Commission recommended in its report that farmers should be given ‘C2+50% Formula’ MSP.Indeed, C2 means the total cost of the crop (cost compressive) and 50% in formulas, 50% profit on the crop.If you say this in easy language, then 50 percent of the cost and profit should be added to the farmers and this should be the MSP price.In a way, one and a half times the MSP should be fixed at the cost.However, this issue has not yet been completely resolved.Also read: India’s great agricultural scientist MS Swaminathan dies, goodbye to the world at the age of 98
