Noted agricultural scientist MS Swaminathan is no longer in this world, he died on Thursday at the age of 98.Swaminathan, who contributed significantly to the country’s ‘Green Revolution’, has three daughters.One of his daughter Dr. Soumya Swaminathan is the former chief scientist of the World Health Organization.The path -reversing work of the staunch advocate Swaminathan of food and nutrition security stopped the threat of famine during the 1960s.Swaminathan, a warrior fighting against hunger, was undergoing treatment for age related diseases for some time.On his death, President Draupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised Swaminathan for service to the nation.President Murmu said that Swaminathan has left a rich heritage behind him which will serve as a guide in taking the world to a safe and hunger-free future for humanity.Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over Swaminathan’s death and said that his unprecedented contribution in the agriculture sector changed the lives of millions of people and ensured food security for the nation.Prime Minister Modi said in a series post on ‘X’ (earlier Twitter), “The death of Dr. MS Swaminathan was deeply saddened.In a very delicate era in the history of our country, his unprecedented contribution to agriculture changed the lives of millions of people and ensured food security for our nation. ”PM Modi said that other than his revolutionary contribution to agriculture,Swaminathan was a ‘powerhouse’ of innovation and a skilled patron for many people.He said that his unwavering commitment to research and his role of the advocate for the people made an indelible impression on countless scientists and inventors.He said, “I will always cherish my conversation with Dr. Swaminathan.His passion to see India progress was exemplary.Their life and work will inspire generations to come.Condolences to his family and fans. “Swaminathan goodbye to the worldAccording to the news agency language, AK Singh, director of the Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI), said that Swaminathan’s death ended an era of agricultural research, education and expansion which was filled with easy innovation.Former Congress president Rahul Gandhi said that Swaminathan’s strong commitment to bring revolution in India’s agriculture sector turned it into a country that produces more food than his needs. Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh said that Swaminathan said that SwaminathanBy the middle of the 70s, India was made self -sufficient in rice and wheat.Farmer leader Rakesh Tikait said that India will always remember Swaminathan for positive changes brought to farming and farmers.Swaminathan was part of every important initiative related to food security and agriculture and he also contributed significantly in focusing on coarse grains for nutrition security.He was also a director of the Indian Agricultural Research Institute (1961-72), Director General of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research and Secretary to the Government of India (1972-79) in the Department of Agricultural Research and Education.Underlining his leadership in the Green Revolution by the Nation Environment Program, he has been described as “the father of economic ecology”.There was a break on such starvationIn the 1960s, when India was moving towards famine, Swaminathan became the first person to receive the World Food Award (1987) to develop good yielding varieties of wheat and rice.According to the ‘World Food Prize Foundation’, the production of wheat was doubled in a few years, making the country self -sufficient and millions of people survived starvation.He received 84 honorary doctors degrees from universities around the world.He has been a Fellow of several major scientific academy including ‘Royal Society of London’ and ‘US National Academy of Sciences’.He was also a Rajya Sabha member from 2007 to 2013.He also serves as Principal Secretary (1979–80) in the Ministry of Agriculture, Planning Commission (1980-82) and later as Director General (1982-88) in the International Rice Research Institute of Member (Science and Agriculture) and Philippine.GiveHe also presided over the high -level expert panel for the World Committee on Food Security from 2010 to 2013.Swaminathan also presided over the workforce constituted by the Ministry of External Affairs to monitor the projects being run in Afghanistan and Myanmar in the field of agriculture.Former United Nations General Secretary Javier Perez de Suillee described him as “a legend whose name will be recorded in history as a rare -specific world -renowned scientist.”
